Having a screen recorder installed on your computer can be quite useful. There are many ways in which a screen recorder can come in handy. If you are a gamer, then you can simply capture your gameplay/gameplay recording and show it to your friends or upload it on Youtube. As a software reviewer, I have to use a screen recording software quite a lot for recording review videos. In this review, we will be checking out the FonePaw Screen Recorder which can do quite more than just record your computer screen. Let’s have a look.

Price and Tech Specifications

The FonePaw Screen Recorder will cost you $34.95, but you can try out the trial version for free which gives you full access to the software but with two limitations. You can only record a video for up to three minutes and you cannot clip the video. So you can try out the software before purchasing it. Once you are satisfied with the software, then you can purchase it from here. The software supports both Windows and Mac.  These are the system requirements:

FonePaw Screen Recorder Features

  • Lets you record your desktop screen
  • Record video from your webcam
  • Has an audio recorder that lets you record audio separately
  • One-click screenshot button
  • Export your recordings to multiple formats
  • Scheduled Recording

How to record videos with the FonePaw Screen Recorder

FonePaw Screen Recorder has a user-friendly interface and it is quite simple to use. This is the main menu of the software. You get three options to choose from. The first one is the Video Recorder. The second one is the Audio Recorder, and the third one is Screen Capture. Let’s have a look at the Video Recorder.

Clicking on the Video Recorder will open a new menu. Along with the menu, you also get a blue border. The blue border is the aspect ratio. Whatever’s inside the blue border will be recorded. You can click on the edges of the border to scale the size of the recording. Or you can click on “Custom” to set a specific size. If you want to record the whole screen, then simply click on “Full”. If you have multiple monitors, then you can choose which display you want to record. If you have a webcam, you can use the webcam feature to record video. You can also set the system and microphone sound from here. Any of these options can be toggled off if not needed in the recording. With this, you are ready to record your screen. Click on the “REC” icon to start recording.

Once the recording starts, you get a small recording window which helps you manage your recording. You can pause your recording by clicking on the pause icon. You can also minimize the recording window if you don’t want to see it. There is also a timer available which lets you know how much time has passed and also how much the file size of the recording will be. The camera icon is a one-click screenshot button.

You can click on the clock to set the record length of the window if you want the recorder to record the video just for a specific amount of time.

Then we have the Edit menu which lets us do real-time annotations while recording. This can be useful for making tutorials or other videos where you need to write or mark something on the screen. You can draw shapes, lines, arrows, paint, write texts, and use marking numbers. And you can easily erase or undo anything if you make a mistake while editing. Once you are done recording, click on the red stop icon to stop recording.

Once the recording is finished, you can view the recording. You can choose to clip/trim the video to remove any unnecessary parts. You can do this either by setting the exact start and end frame or you can drag the orange start and end marker point to your desired location to clip the video. If you are satisfied with the recording, then you can save it, or you can simply re-record it again.

Advanced Recorder

Over here, you can find some advanced recording options. If you want the recorder to record the area just around the mouse, then you can choose the “Around Mouse” option. So wherever the mouse goes, the software will record the specified area around the mouse.

You can also set the recorder to follow the mouse by choosing the “Follow the mouse” option. This is similar to the previous option but the recording area will adjust according to where the mouse moves. The gif representations should make it easy for the readers to understand.

The “lock and record window” option can be used if you want the recorder to record just a specific application. So rather than resizing the recorder screen, you can use this option.

The last option is the “exclude window and record” which will exclude the selected window from the recording. So even while recording, if you open up the excluded window, it won’t show up in the recording.

How to record audio with the FonePaw Screen Recorder

Recording audio is even simpler than recording video. All you have to do is click on the Audio Recorder, then set the volume of the system sound and the microphone according to your needs. Then click on Record.

Since this is an audio recorder, you won’t be able to use the webcam, take screenshots, or do any editing with the annotations. But you can change the volume if needed.

How to take a screenshot with the FonePaw Screen Recorder

Taking a screenshot is very easy. Simply click on the Screen Capture button. Take the pointer to one of the corner ends of the area that you want to screen capture. Hold left click and drag the mouse to the other end and release the left click. That’s all you need to do to take a screenshot. You can then edit the screenshot as per your needs via the edit menu. Once you are done, click on the Save icon to save the screenshot.

Last Recorder

As the name suggests, the Last Recorder loads up the settings of your previous recording. For example, the last thing that I used was the Audio Recorder in which I had kept the system sound to 50%. So if I choose the last recorder, it will load up the exact settings for me.

Custom Recording Preset

Once you know your recording settings, you don’t want to keep on changing them constantly. For this, you can use the Custom Recording Preset. Go to the home menu and click on more. Then click on Manage. Click on the + icon to add a new preset. Enter all of your required settings and then click on Apply. The next time you want to load this preset, click on More and select your custom preset.

Task Scheduler

With the Task Scheduler, you can schedule multiple tasks for the software. You can schedule a task so that the recording automatically starts at a specific day, date and time. You can even set as to how long you want the recorder to record and choose to repeat the task again. You can always turn off the task if not needed by re-opening the task scheduler.

Mini Interface

The Mini Interface can be accessed by clicking on the “Mini” button on the top right corner of the application window. This opens up a mini recording interface with minimal settings instead of a larger interface. The mini interface can be used if you just want to do a quick video/audio recording and don’t want to be bothered with the other advanced settings. The mini interface also doesn’t occupy too much of the screen and can be hidden in the corner.

Conclusion

The FonePaw Screen Recorder is an amazing software that lets you record your computer’s screen and audio. The software is available for both Windows and Mac. It is easy to use and is packed with quite a lot of features like annotations, custom presets, task schedule and more. The software costs $34.95 which is quite affordable considering what this simple screen recorder can do. You can also check out the trial version for free to see if this is the screen recorder for you or not.
