The JBL Portable app adds another layer of control from a compatible phone. It can be used for supported firmware updates, product features, and equalizer adjustments. That means you are not completely locked into the speaker’s default sound profile if you prefer to make some tonal adjustments for different types of music.

JBL also incorporated recycled materials into parts of the Go 4. The company says the speaker uses post-consumer recycled plastic and recycled fabric in the speaker grille, while the packaging uses FSC-certified paper printed with soy ink. Those details do not change how the speaker sounds, but they are useful to know if material choices are part of how you evaluate electronics.

The biggest reason to consider the Go 4 is not that it tries to compete with much larger speakers. It is that you can realistically take it places where you might decide a larger speaker is not worth carrying. Keep it in a work bag for a hotel stay, bring it outside while grilling, set it beside a chair at the beach, or use it on a desk when laptop speakers are not cutting it.
