If you’re a fan of innovative technology, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard about Meta’s new VR headsets. The Meta Quest 3 VR headset was released on October 20, 2023, while the Meta Quest 2 was on October 13, 2020 (over 3 years ago). So, if you’re considering buying one of these two options, you probably don’t know if there’s a big hardware difference yet. Read on to find out what the differences and improvements are between Meta Quest 3 and Quest 2.

Processor & Performance

Well, the main difference between Meta Quest 3 and Quest 2 is their performance, and this is because they both use different processors. The Meta Quest 2 uses a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 processor, while the Quest 3 uses a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2. They may look similar in name, but Meta claims that the Quest 3 is up to twice as powerful, which means better gaming performance.

Not only does the Meta Quest 3 have a better processor, but it also has 8GB of RAM, as opposed to 6GB on the previous model. This will go a long way in enjoying the more than 500 immersive experiences available. The maximum capacity has also been improved, instead of having 64GB as a minimum, the initial storage will start from 128GB and a maximum capacity of 512GB. The price also increases significantly by choosing the largest storage capacity.

Comfort is also an important aspect that Meta has updated, so most users notice big improvements, as the Meta Quest 3 has been redesigned to be much more comfortable and avoid discomfort after using them for more than 1 hour.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusive Features

Meta has added some exclusive features you can only enjoy using the Quest 3. One of the most notable differences is how they have focused on mixed virtual reality, that is, how the real world can be combined with virtual reality to create tremendously fun experiences and open a range of possibilities. So far, there are only a few games that offer this feature, but in the future, Meta promised to expand the store’s library.

Can you imagine learning to play the piano without a piano? With mixed VR, this is one of the craziest and most useful experiences available on the Meta Quest 3.

Price

Even though these VR headsets offer the best technology, Meta has done its best to offer them at a fair price. So, the Meta Quest 2 can be had for $299.99, while the Meta Quest 3 is available for $499. Prices increase significantly if you choose the option with 512GB capacity. Meta also offers frequent discounts, so pricing may be subject to change at any time.

Is it worth upgrading to Meta Quest 3?

I previously talked about the specs and significant improvement of these VR headsets, but this doesn’t mean you should upgrade if you already own the Meta Quest 3. Although they offer interesting features, they are still not fully leveraged, but in the long run, it will be worth it because the technology of the Meta Quest 2 will become obsolete and might not offer the best experience in new releases. So, if you want the best tech now, the Meta Quest 3 is the best option, but if you already own the Meta Quest 2 and are on a tight budget, then you could wait a few more months before thinking about making the generation leap.
