Epic introduced the new game engine Unreal Engine 5 and demonstrated its capabilities with the example of the game launched on PlayStation 5.

Unreal Engine 5 is an engine and game development tool that Epic will provide to other developers. To demonstrate the engine, Epic has prepared a small game that was launched on PlayStation 5 in real-time. This means that this quality of graphics and detail will be able to provide the next-gen console.

This game was launched on the new PlayStation 5 (devkit, version for developers) – in the video with the gameplay developers really controlled the hero. The game worked directly on the console without any additional devices, like on the computer for several thousand dollars.

New consoles and Unreal Engine 5 engine focused not on the graphics quality, but on simplification of the game development process. For example, Lumen technology in the engine allows us to set light sources in games automatically – light can be reflected an infinite number of times from any surface as in real life. It was achieved due to ray tracing, such technology is already available in NVIDIA RTX graphics cards on PC, now it is available for consoles. In the past, developers have manually customized each light source and reflection to make it look believable.

Also, the new engine is changing the way developers work with models in games, eliminating most of the routine work. They will be able to load the finished 3D model with the highest level of detail, and the engine itself adapts it for the game so that the object looks as detailed as it needs at the moment. That is a great option because all designers, get used to working with mockups, like free business card mockups. We hope that this technology will make possible creating video games much faster.

Fast SSDs in the PS5 and Xbox Series X allow you to display a huge number of small objects in the frame, because they are loaded into the game instantly. With older consoles, developers had to go for tricks and adapt to slow HDDs and small amounts of RAM and graphics memory.

For ordinary people, this demonstration shows what the new generation of consoles are capable of and how games will change with the introduction of fast SSD. The PS5 has a drive that can reach speeds of up to 5.5 Gbps, a result no existing PC SSD can deliver. The Unreal Engine 5 engine will run on the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac, PC and even iOS or Android, but only the new PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles can unlock the full potential of next-gen games.

This game, which Epic has launched on the PS5, will never come out as a set of scenes and gameplay to demonstrate the engine’s capabilities. All you have to do is wait for the developers to master the engine and start releasing games with this kind of detail and graphics on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The new generation consoles will be released at the end of 2020 and their prices have not been announced yet.

However, the old PS4 and Xbox One consoles will not disappear from the market and will be available as low-cost solutions for games.
