A few months ago, I reviewed the Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software Review which lets you recover permanently deleted files from various memory storage types including; internal hard drives, SSD’s, external hard drives, Pen drives, memory cards and even CD-DVD RW discs. Totally loved the software. Our friends at Stellar contacted us regarding another recovery software that lets us recover photos, audios, and videos as well as recover broken or corrupted photos and videos. Also, the Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Premium is the world’s only software that allows you to do all three things in one package. So I was quite keen on seeing how well the software performed. Here’ my review of the software.
First of all, here is a list of all the things that you will need to recover or repair your lost data.
Here is a quick video on how to recover your lost or deleted files using the Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Premium Software. For those who can’t check out the video for some reason can read the rest of the review where I will show step by step on how to recover your files.
Here is a video on how to repair broken or corrupt jpg images and video files.
How To Recover Files
This is the first screen that you will see once you open the Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Premium software. Here you will see three option. The first one is the Recover Photo, Audio & Video. This lets you recover your desired multimedia files from any storage device. The second option is the Repaid JPEG files. This option lets you recover your broken or corrupt JPEG image files. The final option is the Repair Video Files which allows you to repair broken or corrupt video files. If you wish to recover your lost or deleted files, then click on the first option which is the Recover Photo, Audio & Video.
Clicking on the first option will then open another window which will give you three options. Recover Photo, Audio & Video, Create Image and Resume Recovery. The first one will start a fresh recovery. The second option lets you create an image of your hard drive in case it has developed bad sectors. The third option can be used to resume an older recovery of your previously scanned information. For a new scan, choose the first option.
The next window will let you choose the storage media that you want to recover your data from. For this test, I chose Drive 1 which is my camera’s memory card. Now, this is a really old memory card that I haven’t used in years. So I was quite curious to see how well the software would do. So click on the drive that you want to recover your files from, select the type of data that you want the software to scan.
You can go in advance settings and select specific file formats too. Click on Scan Now after you have specified all the information.
The search time will vary depending on the size of the storage device. My memory card was of 8gb and it took the software around 10 minutes to scan the card and find all the recoverable files.
I came back after 10 minutes to check on the progress and to my surprise, the software was able to recover 6.5gb of data off of the memory card that I had completely wiped off all the data from. As you can see the dates in the image, the software was able to recover a total of 1971 3-year-old image files from 2015.
The process after that is quite simple. Just select the files that you want to recover and click on Recover. This will then ask you to select the location where you want to save the recovered files. Specify a folder and click on Select Folder. This will then start the recovery process and save the files to that folder. And you’re done.
Repairing JPEG and Video Files
One of the most useful features of this software is repairing broken JPEG files. The process of recovering files is very easy. I have two broken images over here. So let’s try to recover them.
Simply click on the repair JPEG option to recover JPEG files. It will open this window. Click on Add file and select the broken JPEG image that you want to recover.
Once you have selected the image, click on Open.
This will give you another window. Also, you can choose to repair multiple images at once. You can add or remove files by clicking on the two boxed below. After selecting the files, click on Repair.
Clicking on Repair will start the repair process. Once it’s done, you can view a preview of the repaired file. Click on save and select the location where you want to save the repaired file.
And viola! You can see that the software has properly repaired the broken images.
Repairing video files is more or less the same process. Click on Add file. Select the corrupt video and click on open.
Once you have selected the desired files that you wish to repair, click on Repair. The repair process will begin.
If the repair is successfully done, then you will get this popup window. Click on Save Repaired Files and select the location where you want to save the file.
In case of severely corrupt files, you will have to click on advanced repair. In advanced repair, you will have to provide the software a sample video that was recorded from the same camera. Select the sample video file and that will start the advanced recovery process. Once that is done, you can save the files where you want to. During my testing, I tried to recover multiple broken files. I first tested the repair tool with a fully functioning nonbroken video which resulted in the repaired video coming out broken. The next testing was with a camera recorded video. The software was able to repair the video perfectly this time. I tried around 10-12 broken files and the software repaired them properly. I had problems with my other footage recorded from another device to which the software failed to repair the video. So during my testing period, the video repair tool worked 80% of the times. My final test included game capture recording. What game capture recording is using a software like Nvidia Shadowplay to record your computer’s footage of a game that you are playing. So I had a couple of broken recordings. And the software wasn’t able to repair those video files. So I wouldn’t recommend this software if you are looking to recover a footage recorded from a computer recording software. You can still give it a shot though because even if the video repair option doesn’t work for you, you can always refund the software within 30 days if the repair fails for you. As long as the video is recorded from a proper recording device like a camera or from a mobile, you should be able to repair your video files.
Before you buy
Before you go out and spend your money on this software, my suggestion would be to go and download the free version of the software. The free version of the Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery software will let you scan your files for free. So, download the free version from the link provided above and run a free scan. If you see your deleted files, then go and purchase the software and recover your files. I am sure you will be satisfied with this software. And in the case of image repair, then I can definitely recommend this software. The JPEG repair tool worked perfectly for me while the Video Repair tool had an 80% success rate.
The Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Premium does a splendid job in recovering deleted files. Now it might not be able to recover all of your data as no software can possibly recover all of your data if you wipe out all the files. But you have a high chance of recovering most or all of your data. The repair function that is provided in the Premium version of the software was able to flawlessly repair my broken JPEG files. The Video Repair tool did a great job as well in repairing broken video files with an 80% success rate in my testing. I am very much happy with this software as I was able to recover long lost files and repair my broken JPEG files as well as almost all of the broken video files. Also, if you are not interested in repairing your broken files and want to recover other files apart from multimedia files, then I would recommend you try out the Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery software.
