According to a new report, video gamers can dramatically develop their eSport skills by practicing for only 10 minutes per day. The study also discovered that inexperienced gamers gained the most when they wore a custom headset for 20 minutes before training sessions that provided transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS).
The study was led by researchers from Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, and the University of Limerick (UL).

Dr. Mark Campbell, the director of Lero’s ESports Science Research Lab (ESRL) and a senior lecturer in sports psychology at UL, said their research found that neurostimulation could speed up motor performance changes in inexperienced esports players, and that this impact was limited to more complex sensory-motor actions.
“Our study found that novice gamers who received tDCS over their motor cortex before training improved their performance on the specific task over five days, significantly more than novices who trained following no such stimulus,” said Mark Campbell, the director of Lero’s Esports Science Research Lab (ESRL).
The participants wore a custom headset designed to provide transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for the research, which was published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior (tDCS). When the researchers compared the impact of tDCS on training to non-stimulated populations, they found that tDCS had a major effect on training for left and right targets, but not for center targets.
The Lero team, whose research was recently published in Computers in Human Behavior, a scientific journal devoted to researching the use of computers from a psychological viewpoint, claims that their results may have consequences beyond esports.
According to Dr. Campbell, tDCS can be particularly helpful during the early stages of task learning, based on the results of the team.
“Stroke patients, for example, could benefit from tDCS at the start of their rehabilitation process when re-learning complex movements that were once automatic,” Campbell said.
Further, Professor Brian Fitzgerald of Lero, stated that “Connected health and human performance is an area of enormous growth and software has a key role to play within that. At Lero, our research in this sector extends from using artificial intelligence to improve cancer detection to the delivery of software as a medical device. It is an area in which we are continually expanding our capabilities and our industry partnerships.”
