What Are the Backrooms?

Recently, the Backrooms movie was released in theaters, and if you did not have the chance to watch it, today we will explain exactly what the essence of the Backrooms is about, although we will not focus on the movie itself, since it is only one type of adaptation.

The story of the Backrooms dates back to 2019, when someone anonymously posted an image on a popular internet forum showing yellow-tinted hallways that created a strange feeling of emptiness and silence.

However, the original image was actually taken much earlier, around 2002 in Japan. It was not until 2019 that it truly became popular and opened the door to a whole new world on the internet.

The Backrooms do not really have a specific meaning, but the main idea is that they are familiar places that somehow feel connected to reality, yet uncomfortable at the same time. The term Backrooms is also associated with liminal spaces, which are similar because they are places that can create feelings of nostalgia or discomfort.

Over time, the story of the Backrooms evolved little by little, and the idea of different levels began to spread. It started with Level 0, which is filled with endless hallways and yellow lights, and later expanded into many different levels, each with its own unique characteristics.

According to the Backrooms lore itself, it is possible to access Level 0 through the walls of our own homes. In other words, our reality can create portals to these strange worlds.

Although opinions are divided, many people believe that entities can exist within the Backrooms, some good and some bad. Because of this, exploring the Backrooms can either be dangerous or simply silent and unsettling.

Personally, I have played Backrooms: Escape Together, a game available on Steam that is based on the Backrooms story. Although the game includes entities, it can also be played in multiplayer mode with up to 6 people. So if you enjoy this type of theme and would like to experience it in a video game, it is definitely worth trying.

The game is also still in development, which means many new levels have continued to be added.

Liminal spaces and dreamscapes are very similar to the Backrooms, which is why they are often associated with them. But if you ask me, I think liminal spaces and dreamscapes are more related to unreal or dreamlike places that create a sense of peace and nostalgia. Because of this, they can also create feelings of sadness in many cases, since they feel like places where you can rest and escape from the real world for a moment.

So, we can conclude that the Backrooms are places separated from reality that still share certain similarities with our real world. The internet has been responsible for spreading and popularizing this concept so much that even a major film studio has created a movie based on it.
