GTA 6 pre-orders have been available since June 25, so you probably already know, based on the latest confirmations, that the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI will not have a physical edition like most players expected, meaning no disc version like previous entries such as GTA 5.
However, there is no official confirmation explaining Rockstar’s exact decision, but there are some clues that make it somewhat understandable. Still, that does not make the decision any more welcome for fans, and removing a disc-based version of GTA 6 has not been well received.
One reason GTA 6 will not have a physical disc version is the lack of storage capacity for a game that will likely end up taking hundreds of GB after updates.
A PS5 disc (Ultra HD Blu-ray) can hold a maximum of 100 GB, so it is practically impossible to fit a modern full-scale game like GTA 6 entirely on a single disc. This is the main reason why most modern games do not store the full game on the disc anymore, and instead use it mainly as a license key to download the game from servers.
This also does not account for the fact that Blu-ray disc speeds are extremely slow and cannot compare to what a good SSD offers.
More profits for Rockstar
Although it may sound disappointing, this is actually a smart business move by Rockstar because it ensures that physical copies cannot be easily resold. The code included in the box can only be used once per account, so once it is redeemed, only the account owner can play the game.
So yes, Rockstar seems focused on increasing profits by eliminating disc reselling. Even if you suspect this is to avoid leaks, that is probably not the main reason. Downloadable content from discs can be restricted on PlayStation and Xbox digital stores until launch day, so leaks would not be the key factor here.
What is the GTA 6 pre-order price?
Take-Two Interactive has officially confirmed the price of $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
