People who make a switch from a personal computer to a Macbook tend to struggle with some things. It takes time to get used to the new OS, and some aspects are easier to comprehend and remember than others.
One of the bigger problems is how Macbooks do not come with that much storage space in their disks. Thus, new users find it challenging to keep most of their files on a computer. Of course, the issue is not something exclusive to just new users.
Various people are not satisfied with the lack of drive space. Nevertheless, there are ways around it, and these tips should help those who are looking to free up more disk storage on their computers.
Tip #1 – Use Cleanup Utility Software
When you continuously check mac storage, you may see that the disk space is shrinking despite you not installing new apps or downloading new files.
It is mostly because of the junk files that accumulate over time. App extensions and plugins, caches, certain documents, and temporary backups are larger than you may expect. And these files are not visible unless you make some changes in the system settings.
The best way to remove junk files would be via cleanup utility software. Such software will do the work for you and get rid of all the unwanted files. After all, manually deleting files is not that safe because you may end up deleting something crucial to the OS and bring yourself more problems.
Tip #2 – Delete Old Applications

Applications that have not been used for a while can be removed. Downloading and installing them again is quite easy on a Macbook, so in case you need to use an app again, there should not be any problems.
Keep in mind, though, that dragging an application icon to trash will not delete it. Remember to empty the trash can. Also, caches of the app will still remain and take valuable disk space.
Tip #3 – Get Rid of Large Files
Some files are quite large, and they are not necessarily something you need. For instance, some media files can be accessed using other means.
Another good example is the language packs. Certain applications have multiple different language versions. But for most users, the English version is enough. The other 50 or so languages serve no purpose and those files can be removed.
Tip #4 – Scan for Malware

Anti-virus software protects the computer from various threats. Not having to fight against malware or viruses will help you enjoy using the Macbook more since it will not struggle with the performance.
And while most cybersecurity threats are associated with attempts to steal personal information, there are some that can be detrimental for the disk space as well.
A virus or malware could end up on your computer, and without you noticing, it will start to consume disk space. And unless you have reliable anti-virus software, it will be more or less impossible to deal with the issue, unless you are willing to reinstall the OS.
Tip #5 – Transfer Data to Clouds
Dropbox and iCloud are great because such services are free, and the files are in a safe place. There is an option to upgrade the plan for more storage space in case you want to keep more data there, but the basic plan is often enough for most people. As for access, you can utilize the files in the clouds so long as you have an internet connection.
Tip #6 – Purchase External Storage Devices

DVDs, hard drives, USB memory sticks, and any other external storage device will cost you money, but if you have no other way to keep your larger files, you will need to pay.
These days, the costs are not that high given how fast the technology is advancing, and older devices are replaced with newer ones regularly.
Tip #7 – Use Streaming Services
Streaming services are revolutionizing the way people consume media. Besides platforms like Netflix and Spotify, you have Twitch TV that also receives a lot of viewers who are looking for entertainment.
If you like to consume media as well, keeping movies, TV series, or music on a computer is no longer necessary these days. You have access to a ton of shows or films that are available on streaming platforms. Make use of such a great opportunity and get rid of the habit of keeping your media on the Macbook.
Tip #8 – Reinstall the OS
When you feel like things are quite hopeless, and you cannot come up with a solution, there is always an option to reinstall the OS. The processes may be a bit long, and it may take even more to backup all the files you want to keep, but reinstalling the OS has its advantages. The Macbook will get a fresh start and be rid of junk files that have accumulated over time.
