Guide last updated November 25, 2015. Check back frequently for new methods and resource locations.
The deeper you get into Fallout 4’s customization options, the more it becomes apparent that you need an abundant supply of items. The most popular items that people are eager to obtain are adhesive, oil, aluminum, and screws. This guide will teach you how to obtain a lot of these resources as fast and as easily as possible. Check back every now and then to see if new methods have been added. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
How to Get Lots of Adhesive
It surprises me to see people complain about the scarcity of adhesive in Fallout 4. Out of the list of supplies I mentioned earlier, adhesive is the simplest to produce. To begin swimming in adhesive, plant the following crops.
Note: Each of these can be obtained early on from the robot-run Graygarden. Purified water can be obtained by installing a Water Purifier in one of your settlements with a natural water supply (Sanctuary Hills has a river).
- Corn (3)
- Mutfruit (3)
- Purified Water (1)
- Tato (3)
Once you have collected each of these, go to a Cooking Station and create Vegetable Starch. Viola! You now have adhesive for all your customization needs.
How to Get Lots of Oil
Naturally there are quite a few items you can stumble upon that contain oil. Once again however, your best bet is to make some yourself. Here are the items you need to be on the look out for to increase your supply of oil.
- Acid (2)
- Bone (8)
- Purified Water (2)
- Steel (3)
If you are struggling to get purified water, see the section above for a tip. Once you got all your supplies in place, visit a Chemistry Station and make Cutting Fluid. Enjoy the extra oil!
How to Get Lots of Aluminum
Aluminum is best obtained by hoarding TV dinner trays, aluminum cans, and a few other items. You will soon realize though that this may not be enough to cover power armor upgrades. To help combat this problem, visit the following destinations.
- Federal Ration Stockpile: Some players claim that the aluminum cans in this place respawn. I will confirm if this is the case when I visit it again in the future.
- Mahkra Fishpacking: There is a conveyor belt at the bottom of this complex with an astounding amount of aluminum trays.
- Arturo’s Shop (Diamond City Market): Arturo does have a shipment of aluminum available for purchase if you are not in the mood for combat.
If you visit shops like Arturo’s for aluminum or other supplies, it certainly is handy to have crops or purified water to sell in exchange. See the notes in the prior sections on how to easily hoard purified water and vegetable crops.
How to Get Lots of Screws
In the case of screws, one of the best ways is good old fashion junk collecting. Keep your eyes peeled for items like desk fans, globes, hot plates, and typewriters. If your junk haul still does not provide you enough screws though, consider hooking yourself up with the Scrapper perk. Once you have the perk, weapons or armor you scrap may give you some more screws to play around with.
I hope those of you out there scrounging the Commonwealth for supplies found this guide helpful. As I get further into Fallout 4 and experiment, I will update the guide with additional resource gathering techniques. Happy wandering Sole Survivors!
