How to Create a Full Song in Gemini

A few months ago, I wrote an article about creating AI-generated songs with Gemini, which at the time was a pretty new feature. Since then, Gemini has continued improving its music generator. For example, it used to generate songs with a maximum length of just 30 seconds.

Now it's possible to create songs that are up to 3 minutes long. You can even do this for free, although there's a small trick. If you use Gemini the default way, it will still generate songs with a maximum length of only 30 seconds.

A complete song that lasts more than a minute is much more interesting because it gives you enough time to write your own lyrics. For example, if you have a friend, partner, or family member, creating a personalized song can be a great way to show your appreciation, express your love, or even wish them a happy birthday.

How to Create Music in Gemini

This is Gemini's standard interface. It gets updated from time to time, so it looks a little different than it did in the early versions. That isn't important. What really matters is the plus (+) button on the left side of the chat. Clicking it opens a small menu with several built-in tools that you can use directly inside Gemini.

If you look through the available tools, you'll quickly find Create Music, which is Gemini's built-in AI music generator. Once you select it, the fun begins. All you have to do is describe your prompt, including the musical style, language, lyrics, and anything else you'd like the song to include.

You don't even have to create a song with vocals. You can also ask Gemini to generate a relaxing instrumental or any other type of background music.

If you want your song to be longer than 30 seconds, you'll need to switch models. Instead of using the default 3.5 Flash-Lite model, select 3.1 Pro or whichever is the most powerful model available at the time, then enable Extended Thinking. This unlocks the Pro version of the music generator, giving you better-quality results and, more importantly, allowing you to generate songs that are up to 3 minutes long.

My birthday is on August 22, so I thought it would be fun to create a birthday song for myself. I also did it to show you that by following the method I explained above, you can unlock full-length generations instead of being limited to just 30 seconds.

Keep in mind that Gemini gives you the tools, but creating a great song still depends on your own creativity. Writing your own lyrics and choosing the right musical style will usually produce much better results. You can always ask AI to help you write a prompt, but sometimes the lyrics feel a little too artificial when you're looking for something truly original.
