How to Stop Facebook Ads From Appearing

Seeing as ads are Facebook’s primary source of revenue, it should come as no surprise that the social media giant has lots of them. Not only do ads appear on the sidebar, but they also appear as part of Facebook’s news feed and blend in with regular posts.

Unsurprisingly Facebook does not give you an option to disable ads on its network and there is no way to opt out of them. It is possible to opt out of some of its tracking via the settings – but that won’t actually stop ads from appearing.

Instead there are actually only a few ways to stop Facebook ads from appearing:

  • Hide irrelevant ads

If you see a specific ad that you don’t like, you can click on the menu icon (i.e. the three dots) in the upper-right corner and choose to ‘Hide Ad’. That will remove the ad, and Facebook will take note of it and avoid displaying that ad (and other similar ads) in the future. The same applies if you choose the other option there and ‘Report Ad’ – but that is normally for offensive or abusive ads.

In the long term this will let you stop certain types of Facebook ads from appearing. However it will not stop ads completely – and you’ll still see the same number of ads overall.

  • Use an ad blocker extension

A more popular (and effective) way to stop ads from being displayed on Facebook is by installing an ad blocker extension on your browser. Nowadays there are several popular options that can effectively stop most ads within the newsfeed and side bar.

Although it is more effective, Facebook constantly makes changes that allow some ads to get through. Additionally to block some types of ads that are hidden as recommendations, you may need to adjust the settings of the ad blocker and use custom filters.

Because it is browser-based however, this option won’t stop ads from appearing on Facebook’s standalone app.

Although far from perfect, the options above should give you the ability to stop some ads on Facebook. If you want to stop all of them however, you’ll need a more comprehensive solution.

Completely Stop Facebook Ads Using AdGuard

Compared to ad blocker extensions, AdGuard is a system-level ad blocker. Essentially that means that it is an app that you will install on your device rather than on a browser, which will allow it to block ads throughout your device.

The reason AdGuard is so effective is because it proactively filters out ads and prevents them from appearing. As a result it is able to completely stop Facebook ads along with all other types of ads on various websites, or within apps and games.

Learning how to block Facebook ads with AdGuard is easy – and all you really need to do is install it and it will automatically get to work. If you want you can customize its filters or even add custom filters of your own, but that isn’t required if all you want to do is remove Facebook ads.

On top of being able to stop Facebook ads, AdGuard has features that will provide you with privacy protection. It will stop you from being tracked by third-party cookies and analytical platforms – on Facebook and anywhere else.

By blocking Facebook ads with AdGuard you’ll notice that it loads faster and looks a whole lot cleaner. The difference will be obvious as soon as you install and try it out – so why not do that right now so that you can see how effective it is firsthand.
