If you are tired of the same old horror games that no longer even manage to scare you, it might be time to give independent creators a chance. These developers work on their own, often with little or no financial support, to bring unique gaming experiences to life. That is exactly what itch.io offers: a huge library filled with free horror games you can download or play directly from your browser.
Personally, I have used itch.io a few times, though I will admit pure horror games are a bit too much for me. Still, I can confirm that there are plenty of great titles on itch.io horror games, so you can definitely try it out and download a few.
What I liked the most were the retro-style games, with graphics similar to early console titles, those are my favorites, but itch.io also has plenty of realistic horror games to choose from.

There is a very complete selection. Most indie horror games tend to be short, usually offering around 15 to 20 minutes of gameplay, but some even last over an hour, which is impressive considering that about 95% of the games have a free download option.
You can support the developers

While most games can be downloaded for free, users still have the option to support the game’s creator by adding a payment amount. If you can, consider supporting these small developers who spend dozens of hours creating games simply to entertain others. Most of them do not expect anything in return, they just want people from around the world to play their creations.
Some longer horror games might require a small purchase, but they usually cost just a bit over one dollar. So before you decide, I recommend checking out the website. You will likely find many games that catch your eye and, most probably, give you more than one good scare.
You can also find some demos available. Most of these have a full version on Steam, where developers get more visibility, but they often use itch.io first to gain recognition before releasing on Steam and reaching higher sales.
Once again, feel free to take a look and download free horror games from itch.io. There are even a few non-horror games available, though they are definitely the minority.
