Our friends over at Kingston Technology wanted to showcase their DataTraveler Elite 3.0 USB Flash drives to show just how fast they can help you backup and move files between your PC and these incredible USB drives.

They sent me a review copy to test with and were kind enough to send me 2 more 32GB DataTraveler Elite 3.0 USB flash drives to give away to my readers in a contest which kicks off at the end of this article.

First, USB 3.0 is so much faster than USB 2.0 I put these Kingston Technology USB 3.0 flash drives on both my USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports on my computer and tested with groups of smaller files and single large files so you can see how fast they transfer data for yourselves.

First, I used the benchmark test for a USB 2.0 port to see how fast someone can expect the transfers to be if they don’t have a USB 3.0 port yet.

USB2Kingston

A very respectable 28.2MB/second was achieved writing to the Kingston USB Flash drive when it was plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

But, when plugging it into a USB 3.0 port, the Kingston DataTraveler 3.0 drive really shined and hit a peak of 58MB/second and was able to transfer a 1.45GB file in under 12 seconds total.

Repeat testing did show it vary between 30 and 60MB/second so it doesn’t stay at the highest numbers the whole time, but it was always faster than the USB 2.0 ports which never got more than 28MB/second writes to the flash drive.

Read speeds were even faster, able to reach above 80MB/second at it’s peak but average in the 70MB/second.

Note, I had faster results writing from my SSD drive to my USB 3.0 Flash Drive than from my 7200 2TB Hard Drive as well.

Either way, these 32GB USB 3.0 flash drives from Kingston Technology are fast and well worth the price.  I was so impressed and glad I got to keep a copy and it was invaluable in helping me transfer data from my son’s old computer to his new computer I was building up, as well as moving data around between machines which weren’t on the home network and I didn’t want to bother setting up folder shares.
