A lot of people are going to be trying to tell you what social media is going to be like in 2014, but that’s a bit boring. Instead, I want to twist the knob a little more and head a little further into the future. Yes, I think that social media networks are going to be around in 2020. In fact, there’s a good chance they’re going to be even more important than they are now.

Predictions for Social Media in 2020

Here’s a list of predictions for the world of social media in 2020.

  • Ubiquitous – The first prediction is that social media is going to be a lot more ubiquitous in the future. Simply put, this means that a larger percentage of the world’s population is going to be interacting with each other via social networks online. This goes along with more and more people coming online – especially in third world countries.
  • Private Communities – While most social media websites are free these days, there’s a good chance that you may have to pay to join groups of like minded people in the future. This is actually a good thing if you don’t have to worry about advertisers and your privacy as much! Free social media networks will still likely exist, but most will not use them because of the ads.
  • The Death of Facebook – Some might say I’m crazy saying this, but Facebook is really close to dying. They lost their cool factor a while ago and are just scrambling to get as much revenue as they can. In the future, social media sites are going to pop up around smaller groups of like minded individuals. The days of the one social media website for everyone are coming to a close.
  • One Network, Many Devices – While some people are starting to use Facebook and other social media websites on their smartphones and mobile devices, this is going to become even more normal in the future. Being able to check status messages on any device is going to be a lot easier in 2020.

As you can easily see from the list above, the world of social media is likely going to go through a lot of changes in the years ahead. The year 2020 is not as far away as you might think. The more you understand the changes coming, the better position you’ll be in to not be bothered by them.

Additionally, there’s a good chance you’ll actually be able to benefit from them. Have any predictions for social media in 2020 of your own?
