SUMSONIC ROCK Bluetooth Selfie Stick Review

I have to start this with a full disclosure: I don’t like selfies. I don’t take selfies. I think selfies reflect a culture too focused on the self(ie), and not focused enough on the world at large. Getting a selfie stick in the mail not only made me cringe, but it also made more than one friend take me less seriously as a human.

I don't get it... what does this accomplish?

Having said that, the SUMSONIC Rock Selfie Stick is a really nice product and I can summarize that before going into the full details of the review. While you may think all selfie sticks are the same (and in a lot of ways, they are), the Sumsonic Rock Series Selfie Stick stands out for a few distinct reasons.

A lot of Bluetooth selfie sticks get rejected in favor the 3.5mm input sticks because the clicker is on a remote that you may lose. Well, Sumsonic addressed this problem with the simple addition of a form-fitting case for the clicker. It’s made of the same soft foam as the handle and can be adjusted or removed. Point is, this eliminates the only complaint I’ve seen about Bluetooth selfie sticks. That’s a point in the win column for this product.

Size

Collapsed at 8.5 Inches

The stick purports itself to be the smallest and most compact selfie stick. At a collapsed 8.7” and extended 35” standard size, it’s one of, if not the smallest selfie stick. The mini size expands from 6” to 23.6”, proving itself to be the actual smallest selfie stick around. I have the standard version.  The clamp expands from 5.5cm to 8.5 cm, meaning it will hold anything device in the phone and “phablet” categories.

Construction

Ultra-Light aluminum with a plastic support frame makes this one of the lightest pieces of tech I’ve ever held in my hand. Twist to the right to unlock each piece and extend it, to the left to lock into place. The wrist strap locks onto the bolt for the clamp to prevent the stick from opening accidentally. The bolt allows the clamp 270 degrees of rotation, the widest available pivot for a selfie stick.

Stupidity Test

I couldn't get my phone to take the picture during the shake because of the auto-focus feature. Trust me, it's secure.

Shake the stick up and down with my Note 4 in the clamp. No collapse, no loosening, no phone falling. Everything held in position very nicely. I don’t recommend being so careless with your tech, but it’s good to know that the twist-to-lock mechanism and the clamp are both high enough quality that accidental bumps or shakes won’t result in damage to your phone!

Final Thoughts

Overall, this device is pretty simple: It’s a monopod. The things that separate this one are all in its design. Where most selfie sticks seem to be clones of each other, this one does just enough to stand out as a unique product which I believe improves on the quality of the standard stick. If your into photography, travel, or yourself, I highly recommend the Sumsonic Rock Series Selfie Stick.
