Are you looking for something to buy that special geek in your life?  If your family is like mine let me tell you my top 5 choices for boardgames.  I will do my best to keep this to only 5 but there are so may good games out there.  Board games are a great way to spend time with family and friends. There is such a wide variety out there you can always find something for anyone. Feel free to leave a comment if you need some other suggestions.  Over are the days of Monopoly and Trouble. Sure, the classic board games are fun but its time to get serious about gaming. But the number of new games has exploded in the last several years as designers dream up space adventures, deck-building sagas, and zombie survival games. So order a pizza, invite over a few extra people and let the game begin. These are all games I own and love playing.

 rebellion
by Fantasy Flight Games
This is a great game but be ready to invest some time. It will take you about 2 hours to figure out all the rules the first time and set up all the pieces involved.  This game includes 2 large boards, hundreds of plastic figures plus dice and other tokens you will need a fairly large playing surface.   It is very fun to play once you get started and becomes easier as you learn the rules.  Any Star Wars fan will love this game. Be prepared to either take command of the Rebels, sending heroes such as Luke and Leia across the galaxy to foment rebellion, or helm the Galactic Empire, fielding massive armadas of spaceships to scour for the rebel base, destroying planets with Death Stars, and capturing the rebel heroes in the process. Great for 2-4 players.

#4 Tiny Epic Galaxies

This game is on the shorter side time wise. Playing time can take about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how fast people can strategize.  This is a dice-rolling game in which players toss a handful of 6-sided die and then take the actions the symbols on the dice show.  On your roll you can conquer planets for game points and get new powers. You can slowly increase the number of dice you roll or the number of times you can reroll them, or save points for future turns. There is never a dull moment when you are trying to win. Great for 1-5 players.

#3 King of New York

This is a game that  is easy to play and fun for people of any age. We play this with our kids and our friends.  This is a standalone sequel to the game King of Tokyo that is equally as fun to play. You get to choose from 1 of the 6 monsters to play as and roll a bunch of oversized dice. For those with little hands may need a cup to help roll.  Games can last about 30-45 mins and the rules are simple and easy to follow. This is good for 2-6 players

You will need a good size table for this.  Playing time is about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how many people you have. When we play 2-4 people games last about 30 minutes. You can up to 10 players for this game. Each player gets to pick their little car to move around the track. The board has 2 sides to it so you can play Nascar style or street car style. Rules are pretty simple, get to the finish line first. However, players have to use a bit of time planning and you need to rely on quite a bit of luck. Each player manages when to shift gears, with each gear providing a different speed.  Each turn, players may move up one gear, stay in that gear, or move down gears. This forces players to match possible rolls with the optimum distance for that turn, and hopefully plan ahead.  There are also some traps and corners you have to manage to roll properly through not making this an easy win.

#1 Cards Against Humanity

by Cards Against Humanity

This game is not for kids but is it ever fun. If you have a somewhat twisted sense of humor then this is the game for you. It’s best played with lots of people and even better when you are drinking.  There is lots of add-ons and specialty cards that can be added into any deck.  Games can be as fast or long as you like, easy to make house rules with this game.

There are also quite a number of Cards Against Humanity expansion packs already.
