I consider myself a huge fan of Dead By Daylight, and I can honestly say it is one of the few games I regularly play. I guess the fact that it is a multiplayer game where everything is decided in a single match allows me to enjoy it without focusing too much on a story and simply have fun for a few minutes.

But I have also asked myself this question: how is a game released in 2016 still so popular and, honestly, probably even more popular than it was a few years ago? After thinking about it for a while, I believe a big part of the reason comes down to the smart decisions made by Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind DBD.

Major Updates in DBD

Back in July 2024, Dead By Daylight introduced the highly successful 8 vs 2 mode for the first time. Yes, after so many years, the developers finally added this temporary game mode, which many players found much more fun compared to the classic 4 vs 1 experience.

This is just one example of how they managed to make the game feel fresh again without it feeling like a title that is already over 10 years old. Adding new characters every so often has also helped maintain the hype among players. Personally, I usually play as a survivor rather than a killer because I find it more enjoyable, although I am pretty sure many players feel the exact opposite.

One of my favorite collaborations was the Five Nights at Freddy’s chapter, which included Springtrap, one of the most iconic animatronics from the popular game franchise that, by the way, also received movie adaptations. Similar collaborations also happened with franchises like Resident Evil, where characters such as Ada, Leon, and Nemesis were added to the game.

Improved Graphics and Physics

It may not be the biggest change, but the game has definitely improved visually over the years. It looks much better compared to the graphics from 2016. The physics have also been improved and polished with time. Just comparing how characters moved in 2016 to how they move in 2026 already shows a huge difference in my opinion.

So if you ask me, the key to Dead By Daylight’s success is its fast-paced gameplay, the strategies involved, the variety of survivors and killers, the unique abilities every character has, and the major updates that have allowed the game to remain one of the best multiplayer horror games available today. And yes, DBD also supports crossplay between console and PC players, which has helped keep the community active for years.
