Would I Buy the iPhone Duo?

Apple has announced the first foldable iPhone in history, so this device is certainly an interesting one. Today, I’m going to look into what’s new about it and whether I personally think it’s a device worth buying, especially considering its price and how it compares to the also-new iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone Duo comes with some new hardware features. For example, it uses the new A20 Pro processor. Apple claims that its GPU can deliver up to 40% more performance than the one in the A19 Pro, so we’re talking about a pretty powerful device.

However, I think the most interesting thing about the iPhone Duo isn’t really its processor, but its foldable display. It has a 7.6-inch internal display, while the external display is 5.4 inches when the phone is closed. So, if you asked me, I would probably call it more of a foldable mini tablet.

The crease in the display is much less noticeable than, for example, what you see on Samsung’s Flip phones. I think this is another major advantage because people generally complain about how noticeable the crease can be on these types of phones.

The design also allows it to work better with certain apps that benefit from having a larger screen, especially those focused on productivity, entertainment, and multitasking.

This is somewhat similar to what people use an iPad for when they want to work, but with a more minimalist approach. We know that a tablet or iPad is too large to fit in your pocket, and that is exactly what the new iPhone Duo offers.

Is it worth it?

There are quite a few downsides to this new iPhone. This is technology that Apple is testing, but we also have to consider that this is nowhere near the first foldable smartphone. I would say the biggest problem with this phone is that it doesn’t really seem that convenient for the average user. Instead, it seems more suitable for people who will actually get real use out of it, whether that’s working with apps or enjoying content on a larger screen without having to carry around a tablet.

However, even taking that into consideration, you have to remember that the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the base version. That’s much more than even the new iPhone 18 Pro Max, which costs $1,299.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses the same A20 Pro chip, but it has a major advantage because it comes with a more complete camera system. It features a 48 MP Fusion main camera with variable aperture, along with other 48 MP cameras. The iPhone Duo also has 48 MP cameras, but it doesn’t have a dedicated telephoto camera or variable aperture.

My question for you would be, do you really need a foldable phone? An iPhone Duo would require more care, especially when it comes to drops. I think many of you would say that the cost-to-benefit ratio isn’t worth it, but many people will certainly find great value in simply being able to enjoy a considerably larger screen when the phone is unfolded.

So, beyond the fact that this is a new Apple product, what really matters is asking yourself whether this product actually makes sense for you or whether it would end up being a waste of money because it offers fewer features than the new iPhone 18 Pro Max. And once again, the iPhone Duo costs significantly more.

What would I do if I had an iPhone Duo?

I think that if I had one, I would mainly use it as a second screen while writing. For example, when I’m writing, I really need to stay informed about different products, and that’s where I can see it being useful because I don’t have enough space to add another monitor.

I would also use it to work more comfortably with programs like Word or other documents. At my university, I constantly have to work with these programs, and most of us know that using them on a regular phone isn’t exactly comfortable. So, having a larger screen like the one provided by the iPhone Duo would make things easier and mean I wouldn’t have to rely on a computer all the time to be productive.

Even so, I don’t think it would be worth investing $2,000 in a phone that doesn’t offer me any major advantages over another conventional smartphone. So, I definitely wouldn’t spend that much money on a foldable phone. I also think Samsung has better options available for less money.

That’s just my opinion. I simply don’t see a way to get enough real value out of an iPhone Duo because even if I used it to improve my productivity, I could get a new high-quality monitor for a much lower price.

I also don’t watch many movies or TV shows, so I don’t think I would get much value from having a larger screen for that either. Honestly, I prefer watching a movie on a TV because it’s more enjoyable and I get to appreciate the experience more. A phone is simply too distracting.
