It’s 2020 and the outlook for blogging has changed dramatically over the past decade. Remember when a 200 word blog post was more than enough? Or when a blog post didn’t have so much as a header image? That doesn’t wash anymore.

We’re living in an age of information overload. If your blog posts are to stand out, they need to offer something new and different to everything else available online. And there’s certainly no shortage of competition.

Thankfully, you can use that information overload to your advantage. Gather as much as you can to craft blog updates that are informational, unique, interesting, engaging, and end with the user learning something new.

What type of blog content fares best in 2020? Let’s find out.

Long form articles:

Gone are the days of 300 word posts. Today’s readers want something that they can actually get their teeth into. Posts exceeding a thousand words or even two thousand words are expected. Shorter posts are still acceptable, but they need to be densely packed with information.

Visual Variety:

Ten years ago, you could get away with posting a wall of text to your blog – and people would probably read it. Today, nobody’s going to bother getting past the first sentence. Visual variety is absolutely key. Break up your blog post with interesting visuals to keep your reader entertained. Use infographics to back up statistics that you’ve mentioned or find interesting stock images that relate to the text. If you’re feeling creative, sign up for Canva and create your own blog graphics.

Video:

Videos in blog posts are becoming more and more common. And they’re an extremely useful tool to utilize. A video can summarize your entire blog posts in just a few minutes or even less. That means that even people who don’t have the time to sit and read the post can benefit from it. It’s 2020, and people like to have options.

Linked Content:

Don’t post a blog post that doesn’t link to anywhere else at all. People are used to the information overload. Don’t take that away from them. Show them where you got your information from. Link to similar articles that they might enjoy. If your blog post covers a range of points, link to a site where they can explore a particular topic in more detail. The more links you provide, the more informative your posts will become – even if you don’t write a huge amount yourself. Use that information overload to your advantage.

Engagement:

Last but not least, give readers the option to engage with your blog post. You can use WP Blog Tips to find useful engagement strategies. Include polls asking relevant questions at the end of a post, and make sure that the comments section is switched on so that readers can leave their thoughts. Include links to your social profiles so that users can follow you; you could get them even more involved by coming up with a hashtag about your post. The result: more publicity for your blog.

Blogging is constantly evolving and changing. In 2020, this is what blog audiences are looking for.
