The Last of Us 2 was a much-anticipated title due to its first iteration for PlayStation 3, which achieved significant success. With that in mind, it’s not too shocking that this game is a record-breaker and already one of the best-selling console games ever.
The critics almost unanimously agreed that it’s a fantastic game, but some users had quite a few complaints about the storytelling. After all, the main reason why the first Last of Us was so successful is its excellent storytelling and innovative narratives unseen in video games before.
Read on for more details about the sales and the reception of this controversial PlayStation 4 game.
The Last of Us Part 2 — Sales
The Last of Us Part 2 already achieved impressive results in terms of sales, which are expected only to improve over time. This game broke the opening week’s physical copy sales record by 1%. The game in question was Uncharted 4, created by the same game studio, Naughty Dog.
The sequel title sells much better (76%) on launch than the first title in 2013. Note that PlayStation 4 is much more popular than PlayStation 3, which may have impacted these numbers.
The Last of Us Part 2 was the most sold box console game in the UK by far (40% more than Nintendo’s Animal Crossing). If you think these numbers are high, remember that they only account for physical copies.
The number of sold digital copies is much harder to track, but they are probably as popular, if not even more popular than the box ones. Moreover, console games make up almost a third of gaming industry revenue (32%).
The Last of Us Part 2 — Critic and User Reception
The original Last of Us went down in history as one of the most critically acclaimed video games. It was a game-changer, no pun intended. Everyone who played this game had very high expectations for its sequel, so many people ended up being disappointed.
The critics had different thoughts, though. Most of them seemed to have liked the two games equally. The meta scores on Metacritic speak for themselves. The first part was well-received by everyone, while the second part has mostly negative user reviews.
However, some review bombing may have been at play, meaning that users intentionally gave bad scores to the sequel. We’ll have to wait and see until the scores settle and more people give their honest opinion on the game.
The Last of Us Part 2 — Brief Game Summary
The sequel picks up five years after the first game has ended, approximately 25 years after the game’s Cordyceps Brain infection took over the world. The protagonist of this game is Ellie, the daughter of Joel, the last game’s protagonist.
Ellie is the only person immune to the fungus that causes the infection, and you play as her in the single-player campaign. The Last of Us Part 2 is a dynamic, story-rich, action-packed horror adventure game that features stealth gameplay elements.
The Takeaway
The Last of Us Part 2 is a hit, and that’s not shocking at all. This amazing post-apocalyptic game series is unique, and that’s why it has such a passionate player base. People who are passionate about something can get their feelings hurt when their expectations aren’t met.
There are many negative user reviews out there, but critics are certainly more objective — and from their professional standpoint, the sequel is a huge success.
The numbers speak for themselves. So, it’s up to you to decide whether you want to play this game and form your opinion. After all, it’s also possible that many people who bombed the reviews didn’t even play the game.
